Ever wonder which Milwaukee public figures are dog lovers? Find out with Famous Fido.

Usually Famous Fido is about a person and their dog. But this month it’s about an actual Famous Fido – a dog with a job – Qai (pronounced Ky), the Elm Grove Police Department’s K-9 Unit. He is handled by Assistant Chief Gus Moulas who has been employed with the Village of Elm Grove Police Department since 1978.

In January of 2001, the police department contracted with Steining-Tal Kennels in Campbellsport, WI for a police K-9. Qai, a European breed German Shepherd, was the dog selected and he received Police K-9 certification with Fox Valley Technical College on May 25, 2001. He has successfully re-certified annually in both local K-9 standards as well as to a national standard.

Assistant Chief Moulas has been a K-9 handler for over six years. The K-9 team has traveled to Las Vegas to compete with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department K-9 trials. In his spare time, Assistant Chief Moulas enjoys flying his airplane and Qai has even taken several rides. Assistant Chief Moulas also serves as Secretary for the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Canine Handlers Association.
